On January 20, 2009, a violent clash broke out in the neighborhood of Yongsan, Seoul, between the riot police and tenants protesting forced eviction for urban redevelopment. In a last-ditch effort, some fifty demonstrators had occupied the rooftop of a building slated for demolition to protest against the inadequate compensation for lost homes and businesses. One day after the occupation began, a swat team was sent in to crack down on the protest. Fire broke out during the ensuing scuffle, leading to the deaths of five demonstrators and one police officer. The surviving demonstrators' battle continued in court where they faced criminal charges. The incident, which came to be known as the "Yongsan Tragedy," rocked Korean society and sparked debates about the legal system, the use of police force, the fallout of urban redevelopment and human rights issues. Directed by Hong Ji You and Kim Il Ran, the documentary 2 Doors offers a comprehensive examination of the 2009 Yongsan Tragedy, including the causes, the aftermath and the opposing views of where the truth lies.
